It happens before you know it. You just get settled in to your new environment, you're starting to feel really comfortable, and wham! The professor announces a test! Yes, it was on the syllabus, but it seemed to come out of the blue anyway.
So what's so different about a college exam? For one thing, college professors expect you to do some outside reading at the library, which means you'll find things on your essay exam that don't appear anywhere in your notes.
There are a few things you can do to avoid test stress at college:
- Don't make the big mistake of staying up all night to study. You need to get enough sleep to think clearly during exam time.
- Do what you need to do to remain calm. Stress impairs your ability to remember!
- Don't try to be a perfectionist. You'll only increase your stress level.
A healthy, stress-free state of mind is essential to successful test performance. Give yourself a break, stay calm, and get enough sleep. You'll get the hang of this in no time!
